Welcome to a magical land

Welcome to Scotland's Highlands and Islands, a magical land of immense natural beauty, where the scenery will take your breath away, the flora and fauna captivate, and the attractions and activities excite and appeal.

From the mesmerising glow of an eastern shore sunset to the raw beauty of a west coast mountain range, and in all the vastness around and between, can be found wonderful, exhilarating adventures or peaceful, energy-restoring experiences - whichever your wish, or need.

On these pages we will introduce you to places to stay, activities to occupy you, travel arrangements to assist you.

If it is the great, unspoilt environment and wildlife that draws you, the area is a haven. You can observe ospreys and capercaillie in their natural habitat, spot seals, dolphins and otters from the shore or a boat, watch seabirds dive for food or nest high in cliffs and marvel at the majestic Monarch of the Glen, running free over the high hills.

For even more adventure, there are golf courses from the quaint to championship standard, world-class mountain-biking tracks, high range gondolas or even simple forest trails to follow and secluded beaches that would rival any tropical shore.

And whether wandering across miles of deserted, silver sandy dunes in the shimmering sun on an island seashore, being thrilled by an outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise in one of our rugged mountain ranges, standing thigh-deep in waters of the greatest salmon rivers in the world, following whisky, castle, coastal or Pictish trails, exploring the folk tales, history, drama and romance of this ancient land or simply sitting by a peat fire with a dram in your hand, you could not have chosen a better region to appreciate than this one.

Matching the array of activities and attractions is the choice of accommodation, food and retail. You may wish to live like a king and stay in an historic castle or go for the 'braver' option of a tent - there is no shortage of options and the visitor is guaranteed to find something to suit.

With its abundance of fertile land, clear water and fresh air, this part of Scotland boasts a natural gourmet larder. Its seafood and fish - lobster, shellfish, wild salmon, trout and smoked specialities - are renowned the world over.

Thanks to an ever-expanding air service and a comprehensive rail and ferry network, the area can be travelled in comfort, and drivers will often find that they have many of the roads away from the busier centres to themselves - apart from the odd sheep.

Few places in the world offer such a wealth and diversity of natural beauty, activities and attractions, but this is one of them.
