Huge liner heads for port

26 June 2009

THE population of an Easter Ross town will more than double next week as it welcomes a monster vessel set to break all existing records.

When the Crown Princess cruise liner makes her maiden visit to Invergordon next Friday, she is expected to be carrying 3,000 passengers and around 1,200 members of staff.

Passengers disembarking for visits to an array of Highland attractions will be welcomed by volunteer hosts from the Invergordon Tourism Alliance. The group's work in offering a warm Highland welcome — and encouraging visitors to check out some of the often-overlooked attractions close to hand — has attracted widespread praise.

The expected early morning arrival of the 113,651 gross tonne cruise liner, which is on a round Britain and Ireland tour and will be arriving from Greenock, will be marked by a piper.

Crown Princess takes the record from the Grand Princess, which brought 2,698 passengers to Invergordon in 2007.
