Late-night drink option for Mod

21 May 2010

LIQUOR licensing chiefs in the Far North meet shortly to consider changes in their policy to accommodate the area’s hosting of the 2010 Royal National Mod.

Towns that stage the week-long event – which is often dubbed the whisky Olympics – invariably have bars given the chance to remain open longer than normal so Mod-goers can enjoy the traditional post-concert ceilidhs.

Operators of licensed premises are being urged to let the Highland Licensing Board know of their likely demands for extending their opening times beyond the established set curfews during the period of the Mod.

Far north licensing standards officer David Inglis explained that the feedback would help shape the board’s consideration of the issue.

Mr Inglis said: “Hopefully the board will, at its next meeting on June 8, set out its policy for the period of the Mod. We’re keen to get a feel for the extra hours premises would be looking for.”

Mr Inglis recommends that the operators of hotels, bars, restaurants, public halls and social clubs get their applications in as soon as possible so they can be considered.

“We would appeal to them not to leave things until the last minute, and that applies to people looking to apply for an occasional licence for a function at an unlicensed venue,” he said.

In the case of social clubs, he said they would require an occasional licence to allow non-members to be admitted to functions.

“Anyone who has any questions about licensing issues during the Mod should get in contact with me.”

Mr Inglis said that in approving such applications, the board would need to be assured that the extended licence was for a bona fide Mod-related event or activity.

During last year’s Mod in Oban, bars had the opportunity to stay open until four in the morning.
